Madness To Creation

Where Insanity and Creativity Collide!

(Album Stream) “1952” by GEOFFROY

2 min read

Montreal-based singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Geoffroy makes a point, in both life and music, to weave a tale with his words; one that asks audiences to dig deep.

There’s a sense of nostalgia that permeates throughout Geoffroy’s upcoming album, 1952, and in particular “The Fear of Falling Apart.” A lot of it has to do with retracing his steps, spending time writing in the backyard garden of his childhood home in NDG and digging through old family VHS tapes. It won’t necessarily click with listeners at first that Geoffroy is exploring such personal territory, specifically his mother’s passing from cancer in 2017, and that’s by design.
“Breast cancer took my beloved mother away from me in 2017, 11 years after the first diagnosis. I wrote this song a few months after her passing. In the last weeks, I told her my next album would be dedicated to her. She smiled. I wish she could hear it, but at least she knows.

Case in point: the striking album cover, designed by Montreal tattoo artist Dan Climan, is based on an old photo of Geoffroy’s mother, who the album is dedicated to (1952 was her birth year). The album cover artwork is a beautiful image that grabs the eye, but once listeners explore the meaning of the album’s lyrics and music, a deeper meaning will reveal itself beyond a mere picture. As a result, listening to 1952 from start to finish – as intended – is a complete experience, richly and evocatively layered and textured with live drums, bass, guitars, vocals and synths. He compares it to entering a bubble.
