Editor’s Note: It was good to converse with indie artist Shortly as she is in preparation to hit the road to provide direct support for Mom Jeans and Just Friends. This is coming off of signing with Triple Crown Records and releasing her single “Spare Time”. Shortly has shared the stage with the likes of The Decemberists, Phoebe Bridgers, Mitski, Foxing, and Deerhoof. Fans can find Shortly at the following locations:
Madness To Creation: You’re going to be on tour with Mom Jeans and Just Friends, what are your favorite type of shows to perform at?
Shortly: Type? Shows at places with engaging environments.
Madness To Creation: Most memorable live experience that you have had!
Shortly: Once we played and we were all in such weird moods. I wasn’t even thinking about the show until I hit the first chord. Everything fell into place and we had our best performance. There’s not much to look at from the outside, but the feeling I had is something I carry around with me.
Madness To Creation: Take us into the single “Spare Time”, what is the message behind that song?
Shortly: The people you meet will leave a lasting impression on you long after you stop thinking about them. You might not remember what you said with them, but you’ll remember the way that it made you feel. “Spare Time” is about a catalyst for closure in such circumstances, and the unwavering fear that comes with knowing that you will fade into the background of someone else’s life. It is about lingering emotions of attachment and resentment.
Madness To Creation: What makes you feel inspired when you’re writing lyrics and arrangements?
Shortly: I usually find myself inspired before writing by the things happening around me. I’m reflective to a fault.
Madness To Creation: What is the single biggest reason you got into music?
Shortly: Playing music? There isn’t one. I’ve come from a musical family, you could say, but in the end this is something that just makes sense to me.
Madness To Creation: Detroit is a hotbed for music, favorite Detroit artist ever!
Shortly: Anna Burch.
Madness To Creation: Tell us about the MO POP experience, what are some takeaways that you have from that!
Shortly: MoPop was fun. I learned that I like the sound of our drums on a big stage more. Obviously we like performing for more people, but it felt like we had the opportunity to be a thunderstorm of sound in the space that we had.
Madness To Creation: What are the plans for Shortly for the rest of 2018?
Shortly: We’re releasing music and going on tour.
Madness To Creation: One goal that you want to accomplish as a musician.
Shortly: I’d like to play Red Rocks and I’d like to play Sydney Opera House. As Shortly or not- but preferably as Shortly, and even more preferably with good friends.
