(The Don’s Hit List with The Don & The Grizz Ep. 264): NICKY JAMES

Contributor’s Note:  Country music singer Nicky James joins The Don’s Hit List with The Don & The Grizz for the 264th episode via FAB Radio International.  In this episode, Nicky discusses songs like “Addict’s Knot”, “I Still Miss You” and “Way Too Much.”  The songs certainly hit home dealing with issues such as loss, relationship issues and addiction.  Nicky also discusses how James Taylor, Simon & Garfunkel and John Denver played a role in his storytelling and songwriting.  Here are the time stamps if you are interested in any particular tidbit about Nicky James, which you can listen to via Spotify above or SoundCloud below:

Nicky joined us from Key West, FL to discuss his latest songs.

We started the show with  “Your Name On it”  focusing on the Intro – 1:00 and 1:55 – 2:55.  Written by Matt Rodgers and Wendell Mobley.

“I grew up on storytellers like James Taylor and Simon and Garfunkel”

Nicky talks about when he would go into the Rocky Mountains with his mom.

We then play a moment from “Rocky Mountain High” by John Denver

“When it’s bringing back a memory and hitting you like that, that is real and that is what I strive for when I write songs.”

12:01 – We discuss the track “Addict’s Knot” and focus on moments at the Intro – 1:00 and 1:00 – 2:00.  We talk about how song deals with addiction and what it does to people.

“This song may never go to country radio, may not be a big hit, may not get a lot of streams, but if it can help one person, one person that is listening that is all that matters.”

I talk about how the intro to this song gave us a vibe of “At This Moment” – Billy Vera and the Beaters

18:34 – We discussed the track “Enough” (Released 2020)  and we talked about the moments at 1:20 – 2:20  and 2:27 – to the end.  This song is about being on the road so much, away from home.   Musicians and Truckers experience this when their significant other is stuck at home waiting for them to come back.

24:46 – We discuss “I Still Miss You” (Released 2021) and focus on 1:24 – 2:24. What we love here is the slight fuzzy/distorted guitar sounds.  Randy Montana wrote this song.   This is a great song to play as the final song at the end of the concert.

26:40 – We discuss “Way Too Much” by focusing on 1:02 – 2:02 of the track.   Such an incredible track that is another one that is great live.

29:24  – Nicky then talks about a song (“Fire and Rain” by James Taylor) that affects him deeply because of his mom and he tells an extremely emotional story.   The story will give you absolute chills about how his mom returned to him from the afterlife.
