Contributor’s Note:  Legendary concert promoter Danny Zelisko joined The Don’s Hit List with The Don & The Grizz for the 255th episode via FAB Radio International.  In this episode, Danny Zelisko discusses his book “All Exce$$ Occupation: Concert Promoter”, which has a foreword written by legendary baseball player Kirk Gibson and received rave reviews from Rob Halford, Roger Waters and Larry LeBlanc of Celebrity Access.  Here is what they talked about:

0:00 – We start with the musical intro from “Please Please Me” By The Beatles

We begin to his book:  All Access: Occupation:  Concert Promoter

We talk about how The Beatles “Please Please Me” was the song that sparked his love for music

How The Beatles appearance on Ed Sullivan was the moment he knew what he wanted to do.

How this led to finding the band that will break into the mainstream

07:15 – Danny talks about the “Three Venue Climb” bands like Jane’s Addiction, Bon Jovi, Alanis Morrissette, and Pat Benatar.  The three venue climb is when a band starts with a small venue and then in one year they move to a mid level venue, and then to a full arena.   Danny talks about how bands should return quickly to a market where they are getting hot especially when they are a young band.  He talks about when the opposite happened with Hanson.

10:12 – We ask Danny if he was motivated by the love of helping bands or was it the love for money.  He replies in detail.

14:20 – We asked Danny what was the fastest largest selling concert he had been involved with promoting.  He answers in detail.

15:59 – Who else remembers camping out in front of a Ticketmaster outlet for getting tickets.    Danny talks about camping out for Rolling Stones tickets.  You should hear what traded 2 of the 6 tickets for…

17:15 – He talks about a 6 month period of some of the greatest concerts that you could imagine.

Humble Pie, King Crimson, YES, David Bowie, and Rolling Stones.   As this was happening he thought to himself, I need to be involved with promoting concerns.   Danny explains how he got to build on this to turn it into a career.

31:09 – Danny tells a great story about advice he received from The Allman Brothers where he told Danny to go to a show and blend into the road crew and start loading gear.   This is a great story.  This involved the band Yes and Bill Graham.

36:06 – Danny tells the story of the band that got away:  Journey. This is a fantastic story and a life lesson.
