Editor’s Note: Super Bowl XLI was between the Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears. This video is presented by NFL Films. And no I’m not going to talk about the football game. I’m going to talk about the real star of Super Bowl XLI, Prince.
Usually, Super Bowl performances were forgettable but all these years later, Prince’s performance still rings beautifully in my ears. Prince wasn’t there to promote himself or an album, he was there to celebrate love, life and music with the fans at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. It wasn’t just his music. Yes, he did the songs in medley form of “Baby, I’m A Star”, “Let’s Go Crazy” and “Purple Rain”, but homage was paid to Queen, Ike & Tina Turner, Jimi Hendrix and Foo Fighters for “We Will Rock You”, “Proud Mary”, “All Along The Watchtower” and “The Best Of You”. That’s the way rock-n-roll is supposed to be. This performance still has people abuzzed all these years later. For every nipplegate from Janet Jackson and Adam Levine of Maroon 5, we get Prince to remind us how magical and concise Super Bowl halftime performances should be!
This performance wasn’t just a concert, it was a celebration of music history, life and love. Plus, IT WAS POURING RAIN DURING the Super Bowl Halftime Show performance. Madness To Creation will forever miss you Prince. Here’s to hoping The Weeknd delivers this year at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
