(Mental Health Conversations): CRISTINA SOTO

Editor’s Note:  If you’re a fan of  Tritonal, CloZee, and ATB, chances are you have heard Cristina Soto’s voice.  She has that smooth voice that is perfect for ambiance, trance, folk, and whatever other genre you would want her to sing.  There is a certain art behind having that voice, as the design is to manipulate your hearing to get lost in that music.  Cristina has that and it’s evident with her recently released acoustic remix of “Still With Me”.  It was so good having her on as Cristina Soto sat down with Madness To Creation to discuss her music, mental health awareness and the “Still With Me” single.  Fans can find Cristina Soto at the following locations:

Madness To Creation:  You’ve released the acoustic mix to “Still With Me”, take us into the song and what’s the challenge about reimagining a song?

Cristina:  Reimagining an EDM tune into an acoustic version is a fun challenge because I want to capture the essence of the energy in the original, through acoustic instruments, and also bring a fresh element of my style to the arrangement. That means layering in some new sounds while keeping true to the recognizable pieces of the dance music version.

Madness To Creation:  What does a day in the studio look like for you, plus can I get you a coffee!

Cristina:  A day in studio is usually an evening for me. I typically book in 4 hour blocks, and a full day only if I have a big project like a sample pack that I need to take 8 hour chunks to make real progress. With a full time job and a family, carving out studio time is in smaller increments, as often as I can get away. I would love a coffee!

Madness To Creation:  Take us into the Austin music scene, have you performed at SXSW, how has not being able to perform live affected you?

Cristina:  I have performed at a LiveNation event with SXSW and it is a blast. The crowd is so open minded and cool. They pop in with no agenda, and love whatever they see! Not being able to perform live hasn’t really been as hard on me because I was doing a lot more studio work than gigs recently anyway. Not having the option is frustrating, of course, but I miss studio more than anything with all this pandemic stuff.

Madness To Creation:  What is your favorite thing about music?

Cristina:  My favorite thing about music is how broadly it applies to any situation in life. Happy? There’s a song for that. Angry? There’s a song for that. Getting Busy? There’s a song for that too. I can say with confidence that my life is always enriched by music in the moment. Speaking of, I’m listening to lo-fi beats at the moment for a flow state.

Madness To Creation:  How have you adjusted your social media through this pandemic?

Cristina:  Most definitely. The social pandemic as well as the viral one. Being tone-deaf serves no one. I’m not continuing on as though nothing is going on as that would be a false representation of self and certainly not reflective of what is going on in my head. While these topics weigh heavily on my mind, I do try to put a more creative, inspirational, or uplifting vibe out there while staying aware of the current climate.

Madness To Creation:  We live in states that have cases spiking like crazy, hope you’re staying safe, what do you make of all of this, how has this impacted you mentally?

Cristina:  Thank you, I hope y’all are staying safe too. I go through hard moments like anyone else, but I am constantly grateful for my job, my supportive family, and my health. I am thankful to those who work essential jobs, and for innovation that allows me to stay home. I journal a lot, try to keep up exercise as well, and have definitely made an effort to be in touch with loved ones that lift me up.

Madness To Creation:  We cover mental health awareness first at Madness To Creation, what are some things that help you through the struggles and some things that make you happy?

Cristina:  Therapy! haha, for real though. I’m a big believer in having a mental health practice for yourself. Whether that is meditation, exercise, therapy, meds, and good coping mechanisms… find what works, do those things, and know that they may change in different times / life stages. Nature makes me happy, as do passion projects like painting, baking, and songwriting / jamming.

Madness To Creation:  Sometimes when I’m down on my luck, I turn to the music of Killswitch Engage, what are some things you turn to to help you get through?

Cristina:  I enjoy mo-town, soul, and gospel music in times of struggle. I also love a good comedy special. Laughing really does help!

Madness To Creation:  You did a remake of “Daylight” with Saad Ayub, how did you get connected with him, and I love the chill vibe of the song, what do you want people to get out of it?

Cristina:  Aw thanks for listening and for the feedback. The chillout version of “Daylight” is certainly an escape, and puts me right along the beach, even when I’m far away from one. I hope others feel that too. Saad and I connected years ago through a fan, actually. We have done a few tunes together and he is one of the nicest, most generous people I’ve worked with.

Madness To Creation:  What else would you like to add that we haven’t covered?

Cristina:  Thank you for the thoughtful questions and for taking the time with me. And I truly appreciate the support on “Still With Me”, as it is one of my dearest creations and memories. Be kind and gracious to each other and yourselves!
