(Single Review) “A” by THE ACACIA STRAIN

For those of you who are unfamiliar with The Acacia Strain, let’s just say jaw-dropping riffs and guttural harsh vocals are a significant part of their sound! Their new release entitled “A” features the two tracks, Inverted Person and Chhinnamasta, and follows the singles ‘D’, ‘E’ and ‘C’.

Inverted Person opens with a ludicrously fast pace. The energy levels are high and the heaviness of the instrumentation throws a wall of sound in your face. There’s a fair change of pace throughout the track and this really emphasizes the different parts. By having a slow tempo in the chorus, the guitar leads have time to soar above the heavier tones, whilst the dramatic percussion and guitar rhythms contrast the speed of the verses. The bridge of the track brings in further layers to the sound with various motifs and rhythms. It’s very atmospheric whilst having the catchy chorus melody carried by the lead guitar. Chhinnamasta segues on seamlessly, in part through the continuation of the lead guitar tone. A different melody opens the track whilst the heavier instrumentation and vocals suddenly surround and ground the track. The rhythm of the verses has a great momentum; the panning effects on the guitars give this part an even bigger impact. The power of the tracks ending is immense. The solid, heavy sound delivered, accompanied with the eerie lead, produces an incredibly dark and enticing sound.

The metal quintet has created two explosive tracks that deliver the unadulterated heaviness and dynamics that are so widely loved. It’s a small release, but oh my does it pack an enormous punch.
