Madness To Creation

Where Insanity and Creativity Collide!

(Concert Review) MOTIONLESS IN WHITE & WE CAME AS ROMANS Live at The Apollo Theater in Belvidere, Illinois (10/18/2019)

The show begins in 10 minutes. I’m still waiting in a line at the doors, which opened an hour earlier. Once inside, I understand. The show is already packed.

Despite not being a metal act, opening act and rap-rock group Twiztid was met with a very positive response. There were lots of painted faces in the crowd, signs of the Juggalo fandom, and supporters of Twiztid. With tongues-out, middle fingers up, and statuesque posing, the vocal duo and lone drummer got the crowd hyped for the night to come.

The second opener was the first metal act of the night, After the Burial. I had heard good things about them coming into the show, but was not expecting the intensity they brought. The crowd was immediately back into the swing of things, with jumping and moshing very early in the set. Every track was met with thunderous response, and after just three songs you could cut the humidity in the room with a knife. Despite it being fairly early in the night, ATB garnered some of the best crowd reactions, including large circle pits and even a wall of death, or the closest thing to it at an incredibly packed indoor venue.

The following group, We Came As Romans, was a four piece band for the night, as one of the guitarists was preparing for his wedding the next day. At this point in the night, the crowd surfing began. The show was 16+, and the average age was probably only slightly higher. There was double the security from what I have seen at previous shows, and they certainly needed it. It was almost a constant flow of surfers, and many who were dumped into the pit, went right to the back and started the trip again. While the crowd was wild for them, it was very hard to follow After the Burial, who put on an impressive performance.

At this point in the night, all of the gear and backdrops of the opening acts are moved off of the stage to reveal the elaborate, Halloween-themed stage setup. This is the Trick or Treat Tour, after all, and the perfect time of year for Motionless In White, with their many horror-themed songs. Lead singer Chris Motionless enters wearing a pumpkin mask, before tearing it off as they begin with “Undead Ahead II,” a track off of their latest album, “Disguise.” A headless horseman-esque character with an oversized pumpkin head enters onstage and begins to chase the band members around during the second half of the song. Another large “creature” appeared later in the night, in the form of a veiled black skeleton, following Chris during “Not My Type.” The crowd surfing continues nonstop throughout the set, however the moshing has subsided for the most part, and is replaced with singing along to the song choruses. While the two previous acts had less tracks with clean vocals, Motionless offered up many songs that were easy to sing along or contribute to. The lack of moshing late at night could certainly be due to the audience members actually tiring out from having started getting wild so early. It was incredibly humid in the venue, and even I had to take breaks and step into the side bar area to cool down. People were removing shirts and sitting on the floor, to escape the heat of the tightly-packed crowd. The end of the show saw the band perform “Eternally Yours,” while the crowd loudly sang along to the chorus, and Chris Motionless threw roses out into the crowd.

This is a tour of four very unique and exciting groups, and perfectly fitting for this October holiday season. The crowd went home tired but happy.
