Madness To Creation

Where Insanity and Creativity Collide!

(Concert Review) COLD with special guest AWAKE FOR DAYS Live at The Apollo Theater in Belvidere, Illinois (10/16/2019)

3 min read

The show kicked off with local metal band Silence is Broken, who received good support from the small crowd of early arrivals. Near the end of the set, the singer led the crowd in chants of “F*ck cancer,” before singing a song dedicated to his terminally ill mother.

Scranton, Pennsylvania act University Drive took to the stage next. It became immediately clear that their style was not similar to their immediate predecessor in the lineup. The indie rock didn’t seem to catch on with the crowd that was clearly hungry for something heavier. The group still delivered an energetic performance, and much of the crowd returned as the set went on. The group closed their set with a Foo Fighters cover. It was later stated that Cold had invited University Drive to perform with them on their tour.

Next to the stage was Awake For Days, an Italian metal band, and Cold’s main tour support. After the first song, the crowd was already hooked on their performance. While nobody in the pit started jumping when the band requested, which I might attribute to the older average crowd age, they did give the group a great deal of support as the set went on. They finished their set and left the crowd buzzing, ready for Cold.

By this point the ballroom venue was about a third of the way filled with fans, with very few seated in the balcony area. It was clear that the Cold fanbase is an extremely dedicated one. The energy of the crowd was raised as soon as the lights dimmed before the opening song. If you could hear the crowd without seeing them, you’d have thought you were in a completely packed venue. The atmosphere of the entire set was unexpectedly moody. Low lighting, almost entirely backlit, silhouetted the band members against the bright background. The group sounded identical, if not better, than their studio recordings. After sixteen songs, the crowd was still hot, and wanting more. After chants of “one more song,” the band returned for three more tracks, including one performance featuring the singer of University Drive. If this was the energy of a small crowd at a large venue, I couldn’t imagine what an experience it would be to see Cold perform in an intimate club setting. This is certainly a can’t-miss for fans of the band.
