(EP Review) “Biginastoria” by GIFTSHOP

In 2017, NYC punksters GIFTSHOP was named on Dave Cromwell’s “Best of 2017” list.  Probably because it’s due to their innate ability to mix the CBGB punk rock era of yesteryear with today’s pop/punk hooks.  They decided to throw some gasoline on the fire to make it a raging inferno, turn up the snarl, show off the tongue in cheek attitude in their lyrics, and make it that much more bouncy with their February 2019 release of “Biginastoria”.

GIFTSHOP is composed of Meghan Taylor(vocals), Matt Santoro(guitar and backup vocals), Damian Eckstein(bass and backup vocals), Nichole Onopiak(keyboards), and Jordan Kramer(drums & percussion).  This punk band has taken over the Brooklyn and NYC scene with their attitude, their shoutouts to the punk days of yesteryear with their hooks, and with their innate sense to write a catchy melody.

“Biginastoria” starts off with an amazing groove in the rhythm section coupled with Nichole’s keyboards in “We Want You?  I confess, the intro sort of sounded like the song “One Way Or Another” by Blondie.  Meghan kicks in on the vocals as she makes the lyrics so catchy and snappy.  This song just snaps and is so happy.  “Same” is the standout of the album as it is packed full of those punk rock licks that we are accustomed to, yet GIFTSHOP implores some originality due to their ability to write an absolutely catchy song.  GIFTSHOP throws the listener for a loop as they incorporate a hardcore 1:24 second breakneck speed song “Things I Feel”, before going into a blistering cover of “Ace Of Spades” by Motorhead, which I’m sure Lemmy himself would tip his trademark hat to GIFTSHOP for that blistering cover.

If you miss the glory days of CBGB punk rock mixed with some pop punk elements, then GIFTSHOP will definitely fill that void with “Biginastoria”.  Madness To Creation gives this a 9 out of 10 stars, only because we wish it were longer!  Check out the track listing below:

The vision that I have for this site was that I was getting weary of sites that evolve from the original message to what I refer to as "tabloid magazine stand at the grocery store checkouts" kind of sites. My heart is with the underground bands and for the bands/artists that strive to hit that dream, and they spend thousands of dollars on equipment just to play a $100 show!
