Madness To Creation

Where Insanity and Creativity Collide!

(Concert Review) THREE DOG NIGHT Live at The Paramount in Huntington, New York (2/15/2019)

3 min read

Editor’s Note:  It was such a glorious night for music as legendary classic pop/rock band Three Dog Night graced the stage on the night after Valentine’s Day for a night filled with hits and reminiscing about the days of yesteryear.

Three Dog Night is currently composed of original vocalist Danny Hutton, original guitarist Michael Allsup, Paul Kingery on bass, Pat Bautz on drums, David Morgan, formerly of The Association on vocals, and Howard Laravea, formerly of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, on keyboards.  During their set, fans immediately noticed that the band has a lot of chemistry even without Chuck Negron or Cory Wells on vocals.  This gig was a bit different in the sense that the original guitarist couldn’t make the show and Paul Kingery would take over the bass duties.

The set was a great smattering of hits as Three Dog Night took people back to the glory days of the 60’s and 70’s with songs such as “Shambala”, “Old Fashioned Love Song” and “Mama Told Me Not To Come”.  There were a few covers thrown into the mix, including songs Out In The Country(originally done by Paul Williams), “Sure As I’m Sittin’ Here (originally done by John Hiatt), and “Liar” (originally done by Argent).  The harmonies and melodic arrangements were a nice change of pace from the hard rock/metal world and it reminded me of a time when hits where hits because they were good songs, not just because the radio is forcefeeding us.

The encore was fantastic with Howard providing a wonderful keyboard solo, and they sang “Eli’s Coming” and “Prayer For The Children”.  They couldn’t end the night without singing their smash hit “Joy To The World”, which was absolutely a crowd favorite and people pay good money to hear and sing along to that song.  What a great night for music!
