Madness To Creation

Where Insanity and Creativity Collide!

(Album Review) “Extinction(s)” by UNEARTH

4 min read

Editor’s Note:  Recently, legendary metal band Unearth released their mammoth album entitled “Extinction(s)”.  After interviewing with them this past summer at the Vans Warped Tour, vocalist Trevor Phipps stated that this album was somewhat of a concept album talking about how humans are destroying this planet.  After the indepth conversation, I begin to develop a deeper understanding on what Trevor was talking about in this album.  Juan Hinojosa(ex-Upon A Burning Body, Darkness Divided, Shaping The Legacy), wrote a review of this album.  Fans can find Unearth at the following locations:

So I had the absolute pleasure, of reviewing Unearths latest release before it was Released! And man……………………………………………………………………..I felt like I was shoved in a time machine and sent back to 2005 but brought along some music with me to share with the past. Unearth showcases such a great blend of metal and metalcore with heavy breakdowns and with metric modulated drumming and odd rhythms, along with Ken’s sweep solos and tap riffs! I felt like I was 18 again when I went to shows at the White Rabbit in San Antonio. When Unearth had Mike Justain banging the skins! (The whole reason why I played metal!) I can smell the cigarettes, weed, and grown-man ass sweat in the air!! Ahhhhh the good ol’ days!

The album reminded me so much of the oncoming storm. The driving riffs along with double pedal and driving rhythms. I almost felt like they even brought back some of the EQ settings they had for drums from the TOS album. The toms stuck out to me because of the distinct tone and attack. This album definitely has that same feel and tone and attack. Unearth has always been one of my favorite metal/ metalcore bands of all time.

When I first started playing, they were a huge influence in my choice of genre that I wanted to play. Mike played with Unearth and the Red Chord back around 2005. I had the opportunity to just shoot the shit with him and he is just one of the most humble and down to earth guys. I just give credit where credit is due. Nick Pierce is a beast! Just by listening to him play, I feel like he uses 2B stuck and just beats the living doodoo out of his drums! My favorite song has to be No Reprisal. That one really brought on the nostalgic feels. I wanted to mosh with my dog and throw things around my room and punch holes in my wall. But, I had to remember that it’s almost 2019 and I have to be a responsible adult.

I really enjoyed this album and am super excited for the release so everyone can just sit back, smoke a blunt or drink a beer and just enjoy this creation that takes you back to some times that were probably some of the best and  most fun times you’ve had growing up! I know it was a great time for me.This is definitely an album that I would leave in my car CD player if Spotify didn’t exist! For now, it’s just Unearth Playlist on repeat and shuffle!! 🤘💪🐐
