Madness To Creation

Where Insanity and Creativity Collide!

(Album Review) “Victim of the New Disease” by ALL THAT REMAINS

3 min read

Awhile back, All That Remains released “Victim of the New Disease” via Razor & Tie Records/Fearless Records.  It was difficult celebrating the release of the album as their guitarist Oli Herbert passed away unexpectedly.  There is an ongoing investigation and rumors swirling that Oli’s girlfriend was behind his death as he drowned in his bathtub and they found antidepressants in his system in the autopsy report.  All That Remains certainly went back to their roots on this record.

Honestly, I was expecting them to take the more melodic route as they were known for in their hits “Two Weeks”, “What If I Was Nothing”, and their unique cover of “Thunder Rolls” by Garth Brooks.  I was not expecting them to go back to their metal roots, and to be honest, while they exhibit a lot of talent, it personally doesn’t do it for me.

I am a girl that prefers my rock to have melody and a lot of singing along while rocking out.  I couldn’t get passed nor get used to a lot of the screaming that Phil LaBonte possesses.  I certainly get the appeal of it, just not for me.  I will share with you some of the highlights of the record.

The songs “Everything’s Wrong”, “Alone In The Darkness”, and “Just Tell Me Something”, takes on even more melancholic feelings now that Oli passed on.  This is the All That Remains that I want.  Those songs are slower and more enjoyable as evident in their previous albums when they were more radio friendly.

However, the other seven tracks, while they are talented in that genre, made my ears bleed.  I just couldn’t get into them.

I wanted to hear more melody as it showcases their diversity in their music, especially with Phil improving as a vocalist. I also appreciate the fact that they are ardent supporters of the United States military, their music is not for me though.  However, if you’re into really heavy music, go pick up a copy.  Check out the track listing below:

  1.  Fuck Love
  2.  Everything’s Wrong
  3.  Blood I Spill
  4.  Wasteland
  5.  Alone In The Darkness
  6.  Misery In Me
  7.  Broken
  8.  Just Tell Me Something
  9.  I Meant What I Said
  10.  Victim Of The New Disease
