Why Punk Rock Is Cool As Fuck by Palmyra Delran:

Punk… So hard to describe. To me, if we’re talking about music, I’d say to go back to the late ’50s to Link Wray, who poked holes in the speakers of his amp to create that great broken up guitar sound that so many bands have been trying to copy throughout musical history. In the early ’60s, bands like the Wailers, the Sonics, and the Trashmen (and a lot of other bands) took the vision a step further with their “I don’t give a shit what people think” attitude. It wasn’t called “punk” yet, but described as garage.

Mid to late ’70s was pretty rich with new bands that people labeled as Punk. It wasn’t only about the sound of the bands, but the feeling that anyone could do it. Outsiders and outcasts could fit into a “scene” and maybe even put records out. The music sounded new and exciting in a time when lots of stuff sounded pre-fab and bland. The Ramones were like a kick in the pants to the biz, bringing their loud and fast style with melodic roots – going back to early ’60s pop. It was as if they were trying to learn pop or bubble gum songs but couldn’t quite figure them out. Maybe they came up with their sound by accident. All of my favorite punk bands had their roots firmly planted in retro pop or power pop, with a little snot thrown in. Being 100% committed and true to yourself – and of course – “not giving a shit what people think”.

And there you have it!  Check out the audio clip of “Come Spy With Me” below!
