Jorgen Munkeby of Shining Gets “Animalistic” with Madness To Creation in Latest Conversation!

Editor’s Note:  Norway’s Shining has received a ton of attention for their seemingly sudden departure of their “blackjazz” movement and transitioned into this total party garage rock band.  Their latest album “Animal”, has received a lot of mixed reviews, but people have said that they had the album grow on them!  Fans can find Shining at the following locations:

Madness To Creation:  What were some influences in regards to having this party metal type of record?

Jorgen:  I’ve always been listening to lots of music, so in this king of a transition period you can imagine that I’ve been through a lot of references! But a short list could be Muse, Gojira, Ghost, Biffy Clyro, Carpenter Brut, Bring Me The Horizon, Linkin Park, Audioslave, Devin Townsend, Metallica, The Killers, Phil Collins, and also any new pop, rock or metal song that was newly released when we were working.

Madness To Creation:  Take us into the “Animal” single, what was the most fun thing about making that song?

Jorgen:  The song Animal was started the day we came home from a canceled tour in Europe with Dillinger Escape Plan. We had played two shows when suddenly Dillinger was hit by a trailer on the freeway. After staying on a parking lot in Poland for three days just waiting to hear what would happen with the tour, we were forced to cancel and return home with a huge amount of expenses and no income. It basically almost broke the band financially, and was a pretty hard burden to work through.

The day we came home, our bass player Ole and I just sat down and started writing. We were piss poor, didn’t know if the band could continue or not, and pretty depressed about the situation. That really put is in a mood where we felt we had nothing to lose by trying something new that could maybe give us some enjoyment and raise our spirit again. We churned out the opening riff based upon a song by a Swedish band that Ole played for me. But the most memorable moment was when we started the chords for the chorus. We had never done such pompous pop chorus chords, and love the juxtaposition of it against the metallic verse riff! That new approach to chorus chord progression served as a door opener for lots of other choruses on the album both in terms of chords and in terms of using more synth pads and vocal melodies.

Madness To Creation:  You’re out of Scandinavia, where are a few places you would “Take Me” or your fans to?

Jorgen:  Trolltunga in Norway would be a great place to start! Check out our live version of “Last Day” on YouTube! We actually recorded a whole concert up there, but I haven’t had time to edit the rest of it.
Trolltunga is awesome! But don’t fall, ’cause you’ll die.

Madness To Creation:  What is one “Animal” you love and one “Animal” you’re terrified of?

Jorgen:  I love wolves! And I’m terrified of sharks.

Madness To Creation:  Take us into the “Everything Dies” music video.

Jorgen:  The lyrics in “Everything Dies” has a lot of movement and travel to it. I think the video would be holding on to death himself while he takes you on a wild flight through different worlds, both high and low, while you cling on for dear life.

Madness To Creation:  Let’s say you’re getting into a fight for the title, what would be your “Fight Song”?

Jorgen:  Seriously, what better song to ramp up for a fight than “Animal”?

Madness To Creation:  Craziest moment of 2018!

Jorgen:  Releasing Animal! It’s been a long time coming, and the reactions has been amazing!

Madness To Creation:  How was it working with Linnea Dale on “Hole In The Sky”?

Jorgen:  Linnea is such a wonderful person and great singer, so it was just pure enjoyment recording her vocals for the song! She also had her first child just months before we recorded her voice, so some of the takes was actually done while she was holding her daughter on her hip while singing! I even have it on video! It adorable!

Madness To Creation:  What can fans expect from Shining for the rest of the year?

Jorgen:  Lots of touring! We just finished two weekends of shows in Norway, and will be heading out in Europe on Nov 4th for a month of concerts!

Madness To Creation:  What else would you like to add?

Jorgen:  Make sure you check out our new album “Animal”! If you like our older stuff, you’ll love this one too! If you didn’t like our older stuff, then you’ll at least like “Animal”!
Also, check out our tour list and come to a show near you to scream your lungs out with us!
