Back in the middle of September, rising trap/pop duo outsideOUTSIDE released “If I Don’t Wake Up” in honor of National Suicide Prevention Week. I thought that I would use this song to describe some of the emotions that I felt as I’ve been doing some volunteering work for this beautiful cause.
Unfortunately, it’s a cause that needs to be talked about in our country and around the world. In the United States alone, 22 of our veterans commit suicide every day, which showcases a complete lack of support for them since we send them off on multiple tours of duty in war-torn countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq. 90% of suicides are stemmed from undiagnosed mental health disorders. Lastly, our society is afraid or too prideful to talk about this problem.
I have always believed that just as a paraplegic needs a wheelchair to get around, those that suffer from mental health disorders can be just as crippling. I’m sure we all know of someone where just getting out of bed to face the day is such a mentally exhausting tax to undertake. I am sure we know of a friend that seems to make up “excuses” on why they don’t want to go to that social gathering, and they feel torn between not having to deal with it and being looked at differently at that social gathering. I am sure we know of someone that calls in sick from their job from time to time because they feel very anxious about work. I am here to tell you this: It is OKAY to NOT be OKAY. We are ALL fighting a battle that no one knows about, and my readers, I am here for you to help you with that battle. You can always feel free to message me.
I want to thank outsideOUTSIDE for using their platform to let people know that it’s okay to NOT be okay. It means so much that a music group such as outsideOUTSIDE is using this platform. This is such a beautiful song that we can all relate to. Vibe with me and check it out below!
