(Album Review) “Book Of Bad Decisions” by Clutch

This Friday, Maryland boogie-woogie rock gods Clutch are set to release “Book Of Bad Decisions” via Weathermaker Records.  This album chiseled out 13 tracks that will cause you to move, groove, rock the hell out while Clutch takes a stick of dynamite and blows your brains into smithereens.

What did we do to deserve this brilliance?  What did we do?  Tell me!  I am late to the party on this band, after all it took me 12 freaking albums to finally get around to listening to them, but Oh Mylanta after a night of food poisoning, this album is the anecdote to all the formula based butt rock that dominates the airwaves on your mainstream radio station.

I immediately say “sir, yes sir”, when Clutch demands “Gimme the keys and get the hell out of dodge”, and at this goosebump inducing moment, I must not only urge you to pick up a copy of this record this Friday, but get after their entire discography.  Neil Fallon has such a commanding voice while telling bizarre yet incredible stories.  This song is full of fuzz and boogie-woogie rock that it will cause you to do nothing but dance like a wolf after discovering its next kill.

“Spirit of ’76” tells the time of the bicentennial where Ford Pintos exploded, Richard Dawson caused us to laugh hysterically at Family Feud, and where Evil Knievel caused us to sit on the edge of our seats over his next daredevil trick.  Clutch provides the soundtrack with their fuzz brand of rock and a bass that is so thick that it would clog an artery if it was a liquid. Oh and those sexy guitar licks and solo during the instrumental breaks.  Shave my face with a rusty razorblade with this one!

And Neil Fallon please run for President.  “I’m gonna kiss all the babies and maybe kiss their mamas too” exclaims Neil Fallon in the track “How To Shake Hands”.  How robust are the rhythms and guitar licks in this song.  This song will instantly become a crowd pleaser and Clutch takes a “political song” and makes it incredibly groovy and cool.  This right here shows me that Clutch is such a genius band.  And can we please get Jimi Hendrix on the $20 bill instead of a man that committed an act of genocide with the Trail Of Tears.  Glaring at you Andrew Jackson.

Let’s take you back to the 1970’s, with the days of Cojak, Dragnet and In The Heat Of The Night.  “Defcon, tractor beams, and weaponized funk” will get the listener elated with this song.  The song has so much funk and groove that it needs to be featured on Soul Train.  The horns in the song add for such a wonderful, upbeat mix to the song.

My Lord, I am late to the party, but I feel like I’ve discovered the band that I have been waiting on for the longest time.  This is one absolutely scintillating and titillating album that will cause you to groove your socks off and get your boogie-woogie down.  This could be the rock record of the year as Clutch gets the diamond award for creating a 10/10 star album.  Here is the track listing below:
