(Video Review) “Whiskey” by Young Rising Sons

Out of Red Bank, New Jersey comes a band that captures the essence of what is to be unique.  A band that mixes the charisma and flair of Imagine Dragons with the indie pop sensibilities of The Neighbourhood to even having a trap mix in their music, Young Rising Sons are poised to take over the music world with their ever so catchy and delectable sound.  Recently, they have released their music video for the song “Whiskey”.

In their young and ambitious career, Young Rising Sons have shared the stage with the likes of The Neighbourhood, The 1975, and Halsey.  For this young ambitious career, their music has been featured on various placements ranging from commercials for Toyota, Pepsi, and Hulu, movie trailers for the movie “A Dog’s Purpose”, the Guitar Hero video game, and featured on ESPN during NCAA college football coverage.  Their music video for “High” has garnered almost two million hits on YouTube, and after a brief hiatus, Young Rising Sons have released the music video for “Whiskey”.

Video Content:  The multiple camera shots showcasing the vocalist holding a cup of coffee, with the band together collaborating, and a shot shown at a beach showcases Young Rising Sons appearing to go through everyday life.  The neon sideways cross with the vocalist sitting down and singing with unbridled passion as the lights flicker and showcases different colors adds for a really nice effect to the video.  The vocalist positioned in a seated position showcases the depth of “Whiskey”, that he seems to be hurting for this girl that is battling her addictions.  Towards the end, it’s a powerful shot with the body language that the vocalist uses to convey the emotion behind the song in an effort to push the storyline of the song.

Song Review:  Young Rising Sons are definitely a unique band.  To be honest, I’ve never listened to this band, but their music does sound familiar based upon the placements that I’ve talked about with them.  I really enjoyed the trap effect of the sound during the chorus of the song.  I also was impressed with the little guitar hooks during the intro of the song and how the vocalist can effortlessly change up his voice to make it sound pop-based in one breath while making it sound like it’s ready for EDM/trap style of music in the next breath.  From a lyrical content standpoint, the lyrics are fresh, and “Whiskey” is used as a symbol for the person that cannot overcome their addiction.  While the addiction theme is a commonplace in terms of the subject content of many songs, Young Rising Sons make it seem like a fresh concept with their innovative and creative arrangements and how they showcase their wordplay in their songwriting.  When I come across bands like Young Rising Sons, it makes me wonder why they aren’t at the top of the food chain.  This is a great song from a band that has a world full of talent.  Madness To Creation rates “Whiskey” by Young Rising Sons a 9 out of 10 stars.
