Nashville, Tennessee independent singer-songwriter A.J. Gruenewald has released his second EP entitled “Life, Slowly”, and is prepared to offer contemplation, reflection, and melancholy with this offering.
Bogues stated that he draws influences from artists such as Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and The Hotelier. Bogues has also shared the stage with the likes of Fossil Youth, Rich People, and Northbound. In “Life, Slowly”, he takes the art of storytelling, the art of making his guitars sound simple, subtle, yet emotionally packed, and chocks it full of emotion in order to manipulate the listener into the palm of his hand.
“Life, Slowly” starts off with a track entitled “Orchard to Bartnick”. In this track, Bogues carefully crafts the lyrics in the song to make it relatable to the listener, especially when we all have gone through having to sacrifice things and friendships in order to allow for personal and spiritual growth in one’s life. Bogues showcases a sense of vulnerability, yet through the art of his storytelling, he makes it to where he showcases a sense of strength, which really enhances the storytelling of the song.
The track “All Moved In”, showcases to the listener that you are not alone, you have made the decision, and meanwhile, Bogues pleads with the listener that there is no looking back, only moving forward in this thing called life. The strumming and picking of the guitar sounds subtle yet profound in this track. This really showcases Bogues as a strong singer-songwriter that would be in the same vein of Dustin Kensrue meets This Wild Life and American Opera.
Overall, this is such a profound listen showcased by Bogues. The arrangements are subtle, gently sweeping, yet quite impactful, and Bogues has showcased the art of lyricism and storytelling in his songs, which makes it especially profound and universal to the listener. It feels like Bogues is singing these songs to your soul, and that takes a gift to do that. Madness To Creation rates “Life, Slowly” by Bogues a solid 8 out of 10 stars!
