Madness To Creation

Where Insanity and Creativity Collide!

“Float Around” by Coldfront, taking my generation back to the days of skateboards and the advent of MP3 Players!

4 min read

Out of Oakville, Ontario, Canada comes a pop-punk band that brings me back to the days of Lit, Sum 41, and Green Day where I would rush home from school turn on MTV’s Total Request Live featuring Carson Daly and those on the side of rock were rooting for a rock music video to be featured in TRL.  We would leap with joy when the likes of P.O.D., Limp Bizkit, and Green Day would be featured.  Then Sum 41 and Lit would take over and even the Deftones! Coldfront is bringing back the feelings of Carson Daly, TRL, and when MTV featured music videos with their latest offering entitled “Float Around”, which was released via Equal Vision Records on October 6th.

Coldfront, who describes themselves as “another f****** pop band”, is composed of Tom Stewart on vocals, Jared Cipak on guitars, Chris Casarin on guitars/vocals, Michael Kelly on drums, and Paul Szachlewicz on bass.  Most bands first gigs are either in mom’s basement or garage, open mic night at a local pub, or at a local house party.  The opposite is the case with Coldfront.  Their first show was playing at the 2013 Vans Warped Tour stop in Toronto.  They have also shared the stage with the likes of Knuckle Puck, Silverstein, Such Gold, Every Time I Die, Counterparts, and Like Pacific.  They will also be touring with Hot Mulligan.  Coldfront also boasts releasing three EPs before releasing their full length “Float Around”.

The feelgood pop-punk album of the year starts off with a wonderous track entitled “So Typical”.  Ugh to be young again.  The song is incredibly infectious and it brings you back to the glory days of the pop-punk era of New Found Glory, Sum 41, Green Day, and Unwritten Law with the catchy guitar hooks, infectious lyrics and chorus about a relationship gone bad about how significant others always seem to flake out(which I can relate to on a personal level all too well), man this song is too cool for school!  Check it out below!

The infectiousness continues with the track entitled “Natalie”.  This is the song that causes you to grab all of your friends, get some snackiepoos at the local 711, and head to the destination to nowhere in particular.  I am in love with this song!  This girl named “Natalie” must feel really special.  I especially love the trade-offs in the vocals in the second verse which gives that Sum 41 feel to it in a roundabout way.  The chorus is anthemic and I envision friends singing along at the top of their lungs as if they were being liberated due to school being out of session for the summer!

“Everything You Want Me To Be” is that anthem that gets the house party going as the music video portrays.  What an absolutely fun chorus!  Again, thank you Coldfront for bringing the absolute good times in pop-punk again!  The rhythm section and the tempo changes are polished like a sausage(see what I did there) and the chorus adds the sauerkraut to that polish sausage.  Check out the video below!

Overall, this album is full of pop-punk anthems.  I haven’t heard a pop punk band that could break down genre barriers like Blink 182 until Coldfront came along.  It will appeal to those “Now That’s What I Call Music” CD compilation fans along with the hardcore kids and those like me who just love going to the Vans Warped Tour to experience different kinds of music.  After “floating around”, I have found the album that will be held near and dear to my heart and to punks fans hearts for a long time in “Float Around” by Coldfront.  I give this a 9 out of 10 effort for bringing pop-punk and those feelings of nostalgia back!  Here is the track listing to “Float Around” by Coldfront.
